Competition for new urban area in Munich draws to a close

Munich, 18 January 2010 - The "Leben in urbaner Natur" ("Living in urban nature"), an urban and landscape planning competition for a new city quarter in the Berg am Laim district of Munich, drew to a close with the jury's deliberations. The competition was supported by Vivico in cooperation with the Munich authorities.
The competition was offered for an area totalling around 135.000 square metre (1.45 million square feet) on Baumkirchner Straße. The target of this project is a development serving a variety of purposes, including a high proportion of residences. In addition, the site should comprise new headquarters for sports club ESV München Ost. The eastern half of the area is available for construction, while the western half will be preserved as a nature conservation habitat due to its outstanding ecological value.
The jury, under the leadership of Prof. Carl Fingerhuth (Zurich), awarded first prize to plans by the firms Ammann Albers StadtWerke and Schweingruber Zulauf Landschaftsarchitekten (both from Zurich). Second prize went to Peter Ebner and friends (Vienna) and mahl-gebhard-konzepte Landschaftsarchitekten BDLA (Munich). The work of peter haimerl . architektur (Munich) and Atelier Loidl Landschaftsarchitekten (Berlin) was awarded third prize. In total, 12 working teams from town and landscape planning offices were invited to take part in the competition, which was run anonymously and internationally.
The Munich authorities will now proceed with the development planning procedure for the area on the basis of the results of the competition and a follow-up revision phase.
The results of all participants in the competition will be on show in the foyer of the Munich Planning Department on Blumenstraße 28b from 19 to 29 January 2010 and can be viewed there between 8.00 a.m. and 8.00 p.m. Monday to Friday.
