500,000 wheelbarrows of concrete and steel: Skyline Plaza achieves buoyancy safety

Frankfurt, 19.03.2012 – With completion of the deck over the first basement level, the shell of the Skyline Plaza shopping and experience centre in the Frankfurter Europaviertel has accumulated enough weight to counteract the uplift from groundwater. This important milestone in the construction process was reached two weeks ahead of schedule despite a pause in December caused by low temperatures.

So far, 10,550 tons of steel and 42,400 m³ (55,450 cubic yards) of concrete have been installed to produce the buoyancy security required by a structural shell with a floor area of 30,000 m² (322,920 ft2). The steel tonnage is equivalent to the weight of 500,000 empty wheelbarrows and the volume of concrete is equivalent to the capacity of the same number of wheelbarrows. Placed in a line, the 500,000 wheelbarrows would equal the distance from Frankfurt to Vienna (approximately 750 km/466 miles).

Developed by a joint venture between CA Immo and ECE, Skyline Plaza will contain 38,000 m² (409,000 ft2) of retail space on two levels upon completion in autumn 2013. It will contain a total of 180 shops. A 9,200 m² (99,000 ft2) Meridian Spa will complement the retail range. A 10,000 m² (107,640 ft2) roof garden with a view of the Frankfurt skyline is planned. This is where restaurants and relaxation areas will be located. A garage with 2,400 parking spaces rounds out the overall design. The shopping centre has excellent connections to public transport. Both the city and the autobahns are quickly reached by car. An 80% interest in Skyline Plaza was sold to Allianz Real Estate as end investor by September 2011. The joint venture partners, CA Immo and ECE, each retain half of the remaining 20%.

Joint venture partners CA Immo and ECE are developing the adjacent congress centre at the same time as the shopping centre. This building project will begin at the end of March 2012. Completion will take place at the same time as Skyline Plaza in Autumn 2013. The congress centre has already been sold to Messe Frankfurt which will also take over its operation.
